| I am new to this board and to distance running. I have competed in the last three 5K's here in Batesville. I would like to try the half marathon next month here in Batesville but I'm not sure how to train for it in reference to the mileage. Do I have enough time to train for it? If so what is a good program to use? Thanks!! |

Hi there. It's great to see your enthusiasm & desire to run the half marathon distance. The half marathon is truely a wonderful race. It certainly gave me a sense of personal pride when I finished my first half marathon.
But not knowing your current running base, or how far your recent long runs have been, I'm not sure if I would recomend running the Christmas Half, which is only 4 weeks away. I would think that if you haven't recently (in the past 2 weeks) worked your long runs up to at least 9 miles, then I would suggest you might risk injuy by ramping your mileage up too quickly.
The Little Rock Half Marathon, on March 7, would be a really good race to look forward to. Their web site should have a good training schedule. And many of the White River Running Club members that post on this board have recently trained for the Mid South Half or the upcoming St Jude Half in Memphis.

Now on the other hand, if you have built your weekly long run mileage up to 10 miles and your legs are feeling good....then heck yes, you should be ready.

Thanks for the reply. I just finished the UACCB run last weekend and I'm just basically taking it easy this week. I've been runing a mile a day since Monday and 2 miles today. I was hoping to working on my mileage next week some more and try to get a good feel for trying to run this race. I agree on doing too much too soon since the next projected race for me will be the Penguin Run in February. I'm giving myself until the 9th of Dec to decide. Thanks for your imput. |

| Hi, MXATC! I am taking a 6 week break from running to recover from a calf injury and plan on doing the Little Rock half in March. I'm going to start running again January 1 (even sooner, if possible!) and am also planning on running the Penguin. If you want to get together to do some training runs in January, just let me know. I'd love to train with you! |

| Thank you Ann!! The half marathon is a challenge in itself but I think I can do it. I just want to make sure before I commit to it. |

| The half IS a very doable race. But I agree with Rick. Don't even attempt it till you can do the necessary milage. Otherwise, you're going to likely end up hurt and frustrated. And there are PLENTY of half marathons offered every year. Probably a 1000 or more. |

Thanks Patty. I'll keep that in mind as I prepare for this next race. |

Patty, I hope your time off from running indeed helps then maybe we will all get to see how fast you are. Little Rock? Not me - doing Bentonville the week after. _________________ " sometimes you have to fail to succeed " |
