Talking HALF marathon here.
I know to hold back early, cause I've had that party where I go out too quickly too early.
But let's say everything is feeling GREAT, and I know I can push more.
WHEN do I hit that next gear?
Mile 6? 10? Last mile? _________________ "Impossible is a word we created to make ourselves feel better about not trying." |

Poe: Speak.
KCC: As we stand with two roads before us, how shall we know whether the left road or the right road will lead us to our destiny?
Poe: You spoke of chance, Grasshopper. As if such a thing were certain to exist. In the matter you speak of, destiny, there is no such thing as chance. For which ever way you choose, right or left, it must lead to an end. And that end is our destiny.–"Kung Fu": the original TV series
Sunshine, at a few half marathons, I have felt racey at about 9 miles. I remember at the 2003 Lung Run in Little Rock (wow, I miss that mid Feb race), I lined up at the start, with a work buddy, who has since left Arkansas. It was his first half & I was the EXPERIENCED one with 2 already completed halves and I was 16 yrs his senior. I thought we were gonna run together, but Gene took off like a jack rabbit and was out of sight after only 3 or 4 blocks.
Well, after about 9 miles, I thought I caught a glimpse of a familiar looking red shirt way ahead of me. So I found that other gear & picked up the pace for the next couple of miles until I was close enough to verify that it was indeed my buddy Gene. As I was passing the Govenor's mansion, he was only 2 blocks ahead & I knew I would be able to catch him in the last mile. I was pumped up & having fun as I passed him just before the 13 mile marker & he looked the way I look after a tough marathon.
So at the 03 Lung Run I felt like the champion of the day, but by the time I was crossing the finish line, our friends Ken, Sam, Rita, & Joe were already on their 2nd slice of pizza.
Also, I believe I remember not long ago, that I used the 9th mile of the Hogeye Half to catch up to, and eventually PASS after a mile or two of chatting, a person who calls herself Sunshine. |

Rick,
Ah, yes, thanks for reminding me of that WHIPPING you gave me at the Hogeye--------it was just about mile 9 when you came up behind me--talked to me for awhile--then left me in your dust.
To add insult to injury, you were just coming back from SURGERY.
That was a character-building experience for me, yessirree!!!! _________________ "Impossible is a word we created to make ourselves feel better about not trying." |
