There are less than 40 miles left in the 2009 Grand Prix season and what a year it has been! I want to thank each and every GP runner for making up the best statewide running community in the nation. I also want to thank the individuals on the Long Distance Running Committee who have shared their wisdom and experience with me in my first year as Arkansas RRCA State Rep. The LDRC’s latest task was to set the schedule for the 2010 Grand Prix Series.

Every October there is open bidding for the following year’s Series and for 2010 we received 24 total bids. In order to maintain a manageable and non-diluted Series, the GP is limited to a 20 race maximum. In Arkansas we are fortunate in that the number of quality races continues to grow each year. The Soaring Wings Half Marathon didn’t exist in 2007 and now it is a superbly run race with over 1000 registered participants - and that’s just one example! The only drawback is that is can be difficult to choose 20 races with distances spanning from 2 to 26.2 miles for the Grand Prix Series each year while trying to please individuals from from all areas of the state.

The solution the LDRC came up with is to start a rotation process for some of the Grand Prix races. For 2010, the Sara Low 5K is rotating back into the GP Series and the Tyler Curtis 5K will be rotating out. The MidSouth Marathon will be rotating out, Hogeye will step in as the Marathon State Championship. This allows us to welcome the Run the Line Half Marathon into the Series. Run the Line is a unique race hosted by Team Texarkana with a course that travels through both Arkansas and Texas. There is a nice group of runners from Texarkana who drive an untold number of miles to participate in the GP Series and 2010 will offer the rest of us the opportunity to pay them back.

I know a lot of you will miss the Tyler Curtis 5K and MidSouth Marathon, but don’t worry they will still be around and will return to the Grand Prix Series in 2011. The rotation system allows different clubs to host races in the Series and also for runners to get different experiences each year. For those of you that have never run the full Hogeye Marathon, 2010 is a great opportunity to complete a race that’s been around for 34 years and earn yourselves some Grand Prix points too!

One more exciting addition for the 2010 Series is the return of the Rock Run 8K! The RR 8K was one of the 4 core races in the first decade of the Grand Prix Series. The other 3 were the ARK 5K on Labor Day weekend, the Spa 10K, and the Arkansas 20K. It is exciting to have all 4 of these races back together for 2010! The rest of the lineup should look pretty familiar:
